Permanent Lighting
JellyFish vs Bosso Smart Lighting: Which Permanent Lighting Fits Your Chattanooga Home?
New Age Lights • August 2026 • Chattanooga, TN • 9 min read
What the two systems have in common
Most of what you are buying is the same either way. Both are a slim track or fixture line fitted permanently under the roofline, with low-voltage wiring back to a controller that usually lives in the garage. Both run from a phone app, offer 16 million colors, divide the house into zones so the gables can do one thing and the eaves another, and follow sunrise and sunset schedules so the lights come on at dusk untouched.
Both are rated at around 50,000 hours, carry five years of parts warranty, and are meant to disappear in daylight, which matters on a Signal Mountain house read from the valley or a Fort Wood house in a historic district. So the question is not which one works. It is which one seats cleanly on your fascia and gives you the light you want on an ordinary Tuesday evening.

What are the key differences between Bosso lighting and JellyFish lighting?
Four differences actually change the decision. The rest is detail.
The white light
This is the one most homeowners notice once it is pointed out. JellyFish makes white by mixing red, green and blue LEDs, which produces a clean white that most people are happy with as everyday trim. Bosso puts a fourth, dedicated white diode in every light, so its warm white is a true white with no color cast. If you plan to run white almost every night and you are particular about tone, that is a real difference. If your main interest is color for December and game days, it matters less.
The app and the smart home
Bosso's current app integrates with Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and Control4, so "turn the roofline orange" can be a voice command from the couch. It also carries an AI assistant you can type or speak to ("set a Christmas theme") and a music mode that syncs the lights to sound through the phone's microphone. JellyFish's cloud app is mature, reliable and lets you control the house from anywhere, and it leads on depth of pattern design. If your house already runs on Control4 or you live inside the Alexa ecosystem, Bosso slots in more directly.
The warranty structure
Both carry five years on parts. JellyFish's first year is bumper-to-bumper, covering parts, labor and service. Bosso covers labor for one year and parts for five. In practice the difference is small because New Age Lights services every system we install either way. If a zone drops out in year three, you call our McDonald office, not a manufacturer's support line.
The fixture and the fascia
This is the difference you cannot judge from a brochure, and it decides most Chattanooga installs. The two products seat differently, and fascia depth, drip edge profile, gutter type and how the roof turns at each corner determine which one sits flush and stays invisible in daylight. An installer who only fits one system will tell you that one fits. We fit both, so we can tell you when it does not.
When JellyFish is the right call for a Chattanooga home
JellyFish is our primary recommendation and it earns that on the houses most of our customers live in. It goes in most cleanly where the fascia is straight and continuous and the gutters are sound, which describes nearly everything built in the last thirty years: Ooltewah, Collegedale, East Brainerd, the newer parts of Hixson, and the subdivisions spreading along the Lee Highway corridor toward Cleveland. On those homes the color-matched track sits in the trim line and reads as trim.
It is also a strong fit on the ridge, where a Signal Mountain or Lookout Mountain house is seen from the valley and a clean, consistent outline is what that long sightline wants. JellyFish's pattern library and custom-pattern tools also make it the more expressive system for someone who wants to design their own December.
When Bosso is the right call
Bosso is the alternative we fit to homes JellyFish does not suit, and to homeowners whose priorities point that way. Three situations come up repeatedly.
- The roofline itself. Older and steeper stock, particularly the early-twentieth-century houses in North Chattanooga and Riverview with deep decorative eaves, tile and slate, and the broken-up rooflines on mountain lots with dormers and additions made over decades. On some of those edges the Bosso fixture seats more discreetly.
- The white. A homeowner who wants true warm white as their everyday look, and who will notice the difference between blended and dedicated white.
- The ecosystem. A house already running Control4, or a household that lives on Alexa, Google or Siri and wants the roofline to be one more thing they talk to.
How the site visit decides
We bring both systems to every consult. The visit works through five things in roughly this order.
- Roofline and edge. Fascia depth, drip edge, gutter type, how each corner turns. This is the part that rules a system in or out.
- Trim color. The channel is color-matched to your trim so it disappears in daylight. Some trim colors match one product line more closely.
- White-light preference. If you will run white most nights, we show you both lit so you can see the difference for yourself.
- Smart-home ecosystem. Control4, Alexa, Google or Siri households lean toward Bosso. App-first households are well served by either.
- Budget. Both land in a similar range for most Chattanooga homes. Where one is cheaper for your roofline, we say so. Pricing detail is in how much permanent outdoor lighting costs in Chattanooga.
Then you get one fixed quote. Nothing is ordered until you approve it.
Is JellyFish Lighting a good company? Is Bosso lighting legit?
Both are established manufacturers that sell through authorized dealer networks and back their product with five-year parts warranties. JellyFish has installs from 2016 still running; Bosso publishes detailed specifications, a UL-rated controller and a national dealer map.
The honest answer, though, is that the installer matters more than the manufacturer. The install decides whether the system reads as trim or as equipment bolted to a house, and who answers the phone decides whether a dark zone in year four is a call or a headache. New Age Lights has completed more than 3,000 projects over 20-plus years, is insured, and installs and services every system we sell. That is the part of "legit" you can check locally.
Can I buy JellyFish or Bosso and install it myself?
Both are dealer-installed products rather than retail kits. The track has to run dead straight along the fascia to vanish in daylight, corners have to be squared, the controller needs a dedicated circuit, and Bosso in particular needs solid Wi-Fi where it sits. On a two-story East Brainerd front, all of that happens at lift height. A dealer install also carries the manufacturer's warranty and the installer's service. If you want a DIY permanent product, there are consumer brands built for that, and we compare them fairly in best permanent outdoor lighting in Chattanooga. They are a different category with a different set of trade-offs.
Frequently asked questions
What are the key differences between Bosso lighting and JellyFish lighting?
Both are permanent, app-controlled, color-changing roofline systems rated around 50,000 hours with five-year parts warranties. The main differences are in the light itself and the app. Bosso lights carry four color diodes, RGB plus a dedicated true white, so everyday white is a genuine white rather than a blend. JellyFish uses three-LED pucks in a color-matched aluminum track and leads on pattern depth, with 100-plus presets and custom patterns. Bosso's app adds Alexa, Google Assistant, Siri and Control4 integration, an AI assistant and music sync. JellyFish's year-one warranty covers parts, labor and service; Bosso covers five years parts and one year labor.
Is JellyFish or Bosso better for a Chattanooga home?
Neither is better outright. JellyFish is our primary recommendation and seats most cleanly on the long, straight fascia of newer homes in East Brainerd, Ooltewah, Collegedale and the Lee Highway corridor. Bosso is the alternative we fit to homes JellyFish does not suit, and to homeowners who want a dedicated true white or deep smart-home integration. The fascia profile, drip edge, gutter type and your white-light preference decide it, and we look at all of those on the site visit.
Does New Age Lights install both systems?
Yes. We are an authorized JellyFish dealer and we install Bosso Smart Lighting, and we service every system we sell. That is why we can bring both to the consult and tell you which one fits your house, including when that is the cheaper one.
How long do JellyFish and Bosso lights last?
Both manufacturers rate their LEDs at roughly 50,000 hours. JellyFish translates that to about 15 to 20 years of evening use, and its earliest 2016 installs are still running. Bosso puts it at 25 to 30 years at about five hours a night. The difference is in the assumed nightly hours, not the hardware rating.
Can I buy JellyFish or Bosso and install it myself?
Both systems are sold and installed through authorized dealers rather than off a shelf. That is deliberate: the track has to sit straight along the fascia to disappear in daylight, corners have to be squared, and the controller needs a proper circuit and solid Wi-Fi. A dealer install also carries the warranty and the local service that a DIY install does not.
Which system has the better warm white for everyday use?
Bosso has a dedicated white diode in every light, so its warm white is a true white. JellyFish produces white by blending its RGB LEDs, which most people find perfectly acceptable as trim lighting. If you plan to run white every evening and are particular about the tone, ask to see both lit at the consult.
